Mae's ab workout

Maggie worked out with me, but she was late. The stinker. We felt really silly because we were doing our ab workout on top of the cushion table thing, but it's ok. Nothing too exciting happened.

Monday 7/25 - K

5.01 mi
43:something
lots of machines

I put my laptop in the bonus room because I'm using it when I paint, so idk the specifics of my run time, but whatever. You'll just have to deal. It was a good run, I didn't walk at all which is pretty awesome since I wanted to. I mean I REALLY wanted to. So suck it, laziness. I defeated you.

I used the leg press machine, but whoever used it before me didn't put away the huge circle plates. So I had to lift 6 45lb circle weights! Except this one guy with big muscles saw how pathetic I was and asked me if I needed help. I squeaked out a "yes" in the smallest voice I have ever used in my life, cause I felt so small. When I was finished, I went to take off the weights, but this other guy with bigger muscles said I could leave them on. I squeaked an "ok thanks" in an even smaller voice, and subtly speed-walked away.

Then, I did crunches on this cushion table which was nice on my back. It was weird because it was so elevated and people could see me, but I guess it was better than going back to the big boy weight area.

Body Pump
6.02 mi
58:32

During Body Pump, lower back pains started up. This is not cool, but at the same time it gave me an excuse not to do the shoulders part of the work out. My mom told me I should go ask one of the personal trainers, Rose, if she knew any stretches that would help. I was so scared because Rose is this super intense Marine and I was scared that she would tell me to suck it up and punch me in the face. When I told this to my mother, she told me that it was completely possible...way to boost my confidence. I sucked it up and asked her, and she was very nice. Then I ran 6 miles.

While I was running, the baseball team started filtering in. They all looked at me awkwardly. I started out the run at a slow pace since my back was hurting, but then I picked up speed because I wanted to finish the 6 mi before my mom finished her Zumba class (that I still refuse to go to).

After I ran, I made myself a smoothie. Yay! It's almost like I can work the front counter! Almost.

5.04 mi

I really really really wanted to walk the last mile, but I was running with a coworker and didn't want to seem like a wimp. Even though his arm muscles were probably 17x the mass of my arm muscles. Whatever.

Tuesday 7/19 - K

3.14 mi
25:17
free weights and machines

Had to work out after I got off of work tonight, so I didn't get home until 9. But it's ok, I got my fastest 5k time ever! I'm going to collapse any second now so I'm going to bed. Yay!

5.02 mi
46:53
Mae's ab workout
arm machines/free weights

Today's run was somewhat of a fail (I didn't run the whole time) because I ate too much ice cream the past few days: two whole tubs of Ben & Jerry's, two small cups of Sweet Frog froyo, and the bottom of another gallon of ice cream. All within four days. Whatever. I love ice cream/frozen yogurt, so it was all worth it (aside from the tummy ache this morning, but even then...).

Also, I want to thank the gym for having ESPN on the tv's to ruin the Women's World Cup Final results for me. Jerk. At least they were giving out free sample smoothies.

Friday 7/15 - K

6 miles
56:39

I couldn't find my GPS so I was late getting to the gym. I almost didn't finish my run by the time I was supposed to work, but I made it! And the baseball team was there working out, but none of them were drop dead hotties. Oh wellz. Going to the lake now! YAY!!!

Wednesday 7/13 - K

4.02 mi

crunches, free weights, and machines

Today, I wasn't in a very good mood. I was actually in a very bad mood. It's crazy how working out can turn your frown upside down! Corny, but I'm going with it. I was running and in the best mood ever! My body is screaming at me now, but oh well! I don't have to go to any work tomorrow, so I get to sleep in, yay! And yay for the majority of my sentences ending in exclamation points!

Tuesday 7/12 - K

2.02 mi
15:38
machines

Yay for running my fastest mile ever (or at least since March since I've had my Nike+)! I clocked in that sucker at 7:29. Not too shabby, although I'm pretty sure if I go all out and only run one mile, I can have my time under 7 minutes. Maybe.

I went to the gym around 12:15 this afternoon, so hardly anyone was there. It stunk because I couldn't people watch, but oh wellz. I was jammin to my Super Mash Bros, so it was all good. My legs are starting to get sore from yesterday, which stinks cause tomorrow I'm supposed to do 4 mi and Friday I'm supposed to run 6...eek. We'll see how it goes. Tomorrow I can't go to the gym until after 5, hopefully I'll see some interesting folk then (minus stalkers).

I kind of wish my high school cross country coach would read this, or at least know that I'm actually running now that I have no competitive reason to. He'd be so proud.

Tuesday 7/12 -I

So You Think You Can Dance workout video

I probably won't be posting (or exercising) a lot for the next month, because I've started my internship with UrbanPromise in Wilmington, Delaware and I don't have a lot of time or internet access. But today I did this workout video (starring contestants of my favorite tv show), and it was really fun.

It was a coincidence, because I actually own this workout DVD and brought it to Wilmington, but the one we used was actually another of the intern's, who got it from the library. It was the exact same one I had though!

Even though I won't have a lot of time to work out, I'll still be really active because I'll be working at camp all day, running around with the kids and stuff. Also, there's no AC in the intern houses, so I feel like I lose a pound of sweat every day!

Monday 7/11 - K

5.01 mi
46:46
Ab work
some machines
free weights

Back to running after 6 days...I'm so embarrassed :( At least my excuse is legitimate, I was sick. I failed at 9 miles of my training, though, which bumped me from 9,200ish place back to 9,400ish place on my 211 miles in 2011 challenge. It's ok, I'm back to 9,200ish place now. AND I set a personal record (according Tiger Woods) for my mile time! If Nike.com would ever load, I could post it. But no, it refuses.

Anyways, I was totally workout-stalked today. As I was getting my sweat on, not one, but TWO GUYS GOT ON TREADMILLS ON EITHER SIDE OF ME. Not cool (but kind of). There were clearly at least five open treadmills away from me, so I know it wasn't just coincidence. To make it even more creepy, when I finished my run and went to the back to do my ab workout, one of the guys who ran next to me got like 3 yards away from me and started doing pushups?! And THEN, when I went to the free weights to do some bicep curls, he followed me over there and started doing bicep curls of his own (except he used the 45 lb bar with huge plates on either side, I just used 8 lb dumbbells. I felt so small). I just closed my eyes and listened to some Super Mash Bros.

Shout out to my girl, Emily, for sending me that music. I was seconds away from breaking out into dance multiple times during my workout. Maybe if I did that then that guy wouldn't have followed me around...

7/6 -I (catch up)

I haven't blogged about the last couple of workouts I've done, so I'll just write a little bit about each of them.

Saturday 7/2
Ballroom dancing!
I finally got to dance again, which was great since I haven't since the semester ended. I went to a dance near DC with other people from the W&M ballroom club. It was great. And I decided it counts as a workout because I'd forgotten how tiring (yet still really fun) ballroom can be, especially the faster dances like the cha cha. And especially since you're wearing heels.

Tuesday 7/5
Yoga!
There's a yoga studio in the same building that we're staying in, and they were offering a free class, so my mom and I went to it. It was fun, and surprisingly hard. I thought it would be easy for me since I was the youngest person there, and I've done yoga before, but I realized that since I've only done yoga by myself before, this was different because I didn't get to drop a pose after I got tired, I had to hold it until the instructor said we were done. But it made me want to go to yoga classes at the rec once I get back to school.

Wednesday 7/6
Gym
I planned to watch the end of So You Think You Can Dance while on the elliptical, but by the time I got down to the gym the show was almost over, so after that I started to watch Love in the Wild. I am so hooked. Most reality shows about love are pretty dumb (I mean, this one is too), but this show is fascinating to me because of two things:
The first is the adventure aspect. The premise is that the contestants are put out in the wild, paired up, and sent on adventures. They have to compete against the other couples. I love adventuring, and they do cool stuff like climb over rope bridges hundreds of feet high, or make rafts and pull themselves across rivers with ropes.
The second thing that's so interesting about this show is the social psychology aspect of it (psych major here). The way that the show is set up basically makes it a giant, complicated version of the Prisoner's Dilemma. At the end of every episode two people are eliminated. First everyone has the choice of whether to stay with their partner, or switch. But if they ask to switch and the new person they pick rejects them, then the switcher is in danger of being eliminated. Watching it made me want to learn more about Game Theory so I could map out the contestants' possibilities and choices.

Tuesday 7/5 - K

2.1 mi
19:47
Ab workout

It was so hot this morning...at 8:30 we were already at 91% humidity. I almost didn't run, but since it was only scheduled to be a 2 mi run, I sucked it up and went anyways.

I saw lots of people out doing yard work, which was crazy cause it was so hot. My calves were burning the last mile, but I pushed through like a trooper.

During ab time, my mom started talking to me. Not cool. But whatever.

It's Two-job Tuesday, meaning I'm not going to be home from 11 a.m. until after 8 p.m. Bring it on.

PS: Happy Birthday ISABEL!!!!

Monday 7/4 - K

4.04 mile walk with mommy!

Dinner tonight was delayed because of a huge thunder storm (dad didn't want to be using a metal grill while it was lightning-ing outside), so there was no way I was going to run right after steak (hm, this seems like a trend...). That's ok, mommy said she'd walk with me! We saw a double rainbow all the way across the sky! So intense...anyways, it was pretty sweet. We also saw two ladies in their matching pink shirts going for a walk. We totally beat them, I was so proud of us.

When we got back, we watched last Thursday's episode of So You Think You Can Dance. It was SO GOOD AND HOLY MOLY YOU NEED TO WATCH IT THIS GUY IS SO STRONG I WANT TO BE LIKE HIM IN STRENGTH ONE DAY! Ok maybe not that strong, but wow. Check it out!

Friday 7/1 -I

5 k
30 something minutes
Mae's ab workout

This was a special workout, because Katie and I were finally reunited and got to work out TOGETHER after blogging about our workouts seperately for the past month! It was awesome to get to run with her. I also learned that she is way more in shape than I am! We were supposed to run five miles, but we ended up doing 5 kilometers instead because we (mostly me) were exhausted.

We were sleeping over at our friend Marisa's house, and we got up early(er than her) to go running. Even though it was only about 9 am it was already really hot! We ran down her road on the sidewalk until it ended and then turned around and ran back. I got to listen to Katie rapping, and I tried to beatbox while running, but it was very difficult and I just ended up spitting a lot... plus I can't even beat box standing still.

About halfway back we stopped at what we though was a water faucet we could drink from, but it turned out to be really old and rusty and broken. So instead we lay down in the grass to do Mae's ab workout (which is way more intense than my move-in workout I usually do!). We got some funny looks (and some honks) from people driving by.

When we got back to Marisa's house, we realized we were locked out! We threw mulch at her window until she came down and let us in. Then we had bacon for breakfast. It was a great morning.

Friday 7/1 - K

3.11 mi
32:13
Mae's Ab workout
Walked all around DC

Even though the run was supposed to be 5 miles, it was ok because Isabel was with me and of course when you talk you obviously can't run very fast/it was pretty hot and we had lots to do and ... yeah.

The run wasn't very eventful, but we were honked at quite a few times, including when we were laying on the ground doing synchronized crunches. Cause girls drenched in sweat are attractive, I guess.

We saw this water spout, and decided on the way back we'd stop to get a drink since it was so hot out. When we got to the thing, it was all rusted over and we couldn't figure out where the handle was. I decided it was either a. there for decoration or b. too old to work. Either way, we were disappointed.

This super vicious dog barked at us but luckily it was restrained by a 10 ft. high fence.

We had to go to the bathroom so badly that we almost stopped at this building across the street from where we were running. We didn't, so that's another reason why we ended the run early.

When we got back to Marisa's house (where we were staying!), we were locked out. Oops. Everyone in the house was still asleep, so we obviously couldn't ring the doorbell. We started throwing mulch at Marisa's window. Luckily for us, she heard it and let us in. I'm not sure what we would have done if she didn't hear us, probably pass out or die of heat exhaustion.

Later that day, we went into DC and walked all around. We even got free sun screen at the first aid tent (ok that has nothing to do with working out, but whatever it was sweet). I was so proud of Marisa for keeping up with us and crossing the street in 17 seconds, avoiding being hit by oncoming traffic. We gave her a hard time since she didn't go running with us, but she was a trooper and played along.

Yay together working out and friendship!
